‘ImmunoAct’ developed by IIT Bombay and Tata Memorial Hospital is a special type of therapy. Which has been given to 15 patients in India. According to the news published in Indian Express, three of them have successfully recovered from cancer. Dr. Gupta, the first professional patient to be declared free from cancer, had a special conversation with the media. A few months ago, India’s drug regulator ‘Central Drugs Standard Control Organization’ (CDSCO) has approved the commercial use of CAR-T cell therapy. Under this therapy, the patient’s immune system is genetically reprogrammed.

Colonel Gupta’s surgery was done at Tata Memorial Hospital. The doctors there told that now Colonel Gupta is free from cancer. He is the first patient who has become free from cancer after taking therapy. Till a year ago, Colonel Gupta used to only dream of getting cured but now the doctor has told that he has become cancer free.

According to the Hemato Oncologist at Tata Memorial Center and Advanced Center for Treatment, it is too early to say whether this treatment will work for life, but for now the cancer cells have been freed.

How much does treatment cost?

This therapy has become a lifeline for many patients, including Delhi-based gastroenterologist Dr. Colonel VK Gupta. Dr. VK Gupta has been working in the Indian Army for 28 years. He took this therapy by spending Rs 42 lakh. Whereas the price of this therapy in foreign countries is Rs 4 crore.

It is too early to say anything about this therapy. But it can be said that if cancer is detected in its first stage itself, then the chances of patients’ recovery from this therapy increases.

Where in India is this therapy being given?

Therapies, NexCAR 19, ImmunoACT have been developed. Which is established in IITB, IIT-B Hospital. It focuses on the treatment of B-cell cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. CDSCO approved its commercial use in October 2023. Currently this therapy is available in 30 hospitals in 10 cities of India. Patients above 15 years of age can get treatment through this therapy.

What is CAR-T cell therapy?

Blood cancer is treated through chimeric antigen receptor CAR-T cell therapy. Apart from blood cancer, serious cancers like lymphocytic leukemia and B-cell lymphoma are treated through this therapy. Antigen receptor-T cell therapy is an advanced technology used in treatment. In this therapy, with the help of technology, T-cells of white blood cells present in the patient’s body are removed. After this, T cells and white blood cells are injected into the body in different ways. Once the therapy is completed. T cells work to fight cancer.
